NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GROSVENOR FELLOWSHIP - Congratulations to Waltham High’s Mary Patton on being awarded the National Geographic Grosvenor Fellowship. In February, teacher WHS History and Social Studies Teacher was selected for the prestigious National Geographic Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship. The fellowship is named after chairman emeritus of the National Geographic Society, Gilbert M. Grosvenor, for his long standing advocacy for Geography education in the United States and Canada. Grosvenor Teacher Fellows are chosen through a competitive application process; candidates are selected for their exemplary teaching practice and passion for their work.
As they begin their two-year commitment, Teacher Fellows have the opportunity to travel aboard a Lindblad Expeditions research vessel for a once-in-a-lifetime field-based expedition. This summer, Mary will be part of the arctic expedition the “Circumnavigation of Iceland”. Upon her return, Mary will share her learning not only with her own students here in Waltham, but will serve as a National Geographic teacher ambassador designing curricular materials, hosting webinars and meetups, and mentoring other educators around the world.
